ChromaLight NAB 2023

ChromaLight NAB 2023 One of the first things that really drew my eye at NAB, was the greenscreen at Zero Density’s booth. It looked… different but a good different that made me want to know what they were using. I’ve built a few green screens in my day, and have done a lot of work on greenscreens, but the color of this one was just different, which intrigued me. It turns out that they were using a new chromakey paint,

Krotos Studio NAB 2023

Krotos Studio NAB 2023 If you’re into sound design, you’ve probably heard of Krotos which makes some of the coolest tools for doing sound design for movies. Their tools have been used in tons of movies, and were used to create a lot of the creature sounds in Stranger Things. But as enticing as these tools are, they aren’t something that reside in the toolbox of most independent editors or hobby sound designers… but their newest software, Krotos Studio, may

UNREAL Ride at NAB 2022

One of the main standouts at NAB this year was virtual production using LED walls. In fact it was impossible to miss it, as MRMC and Vū had a Virtual Stage setup right outside of the Central Hall entrance. They had a Tron inspired motorcycle, and an impressive MRMC Bolt Cinebot Motion Control Camera Rig, working in conjunction with a Vū Virtual Production Stage running UNREAL to drive their virtual environment background and LED wall. And while there was too

Quasar Science Rainbow 2 and Double Rainbow Pixel Mapping for Virtual Production Environments

I really like Quasar Lights. They produce very good color, and their Rainbow lights are really flexible with lots of built in effects. But now, with the Rainbow 2 and Double Rainbow lights, they have gotten even cooler If you’ve read my other posts about NAB 2022, you know that one of the big focuses has been on virtual production. Quasar Science has also delved into that realm, offering pixel mapping capabilities with their new lights. While this requires additional

Blackmagic Design at NAB 2022

Blackmagic Design had a bunch of cool stuff they were showing at NAB this year. For me, the most exciting thing was their new HyperDeck Shuttle HD, which is a really nice feeling Jog Shuttle, which also functions as an HD Hyperdeck recorder, recording from HDMI to either SD or USB-C. Additionally, it can be used as a teleprompter. But where it really comes in handy for people with an ATEM Mini Pro (like me), is that it addresses a

Frame.io at NAB 2022

If you aren’t familiar with Frame.io, its probably time you learned about them. I had a vague idea of what Frame.io was, as a media cloud service, but since I wasn’t using it, I didn’t realize everyone would be talking about them at NAB this year. So, what is Frame,io, and why is everyone talking about them? Adobe bought Frame.io a while back, and if you have an Adobe Cloud Subscription, you should already have access to 100GB of Frame.io

Atomos NAB 2022

One of the big focusses at NAB 2022, was sharing of content with collaborators over the cloud. Atomos certainly was one of those companies showing products which directly addressed this new way of working, no doubt sped along by pandemic prompted remote working. Either way, in many ways this is the future of some kinds of media production. Now our tools and connections are giving us the ability to do this much less painfully than past solutions. Atomos was showing

Was I Right About What to Expect at NAB 2022?

To find out, you may want to ready my What to Expect at NAB 2022 Blog Post, here.         It was an unusual year for NAB, and for all the ways it was different, there were many things that felt just like any other NAB, which is a good thing, I think we all need some semblance of as I heard someone refer to it “The Before Time”. So, what was it like?         Well, one change unrelated to the

NAB 2022 What to Expect (If You Are Going)

After cancellations, shifted dates that turned into cancellations, and several Covid precautions updates, we finally have the first NAB since 2019.       I’ve been going to NAB since 2002, and have only missed one or two NABs since. I consider NAB to be one of my most productive weeks of the year. It is where I reconnect to friends and colleagues, find out what is coming out, and lots of other things. For several years I have produced Post

Post TV NAB 2018

We filmed Post Magazine’s NAB Post TV Show for the third year in a row.  This time, we streamed to Facebook Live, shooting in 4K with a Sony A7S running into a Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q+ with Titan option, and used Titan as a simulated three camera setup and live mixer.  We fed the output of this into a Matrox Monarch LCS, and fed that into a notebook running VMix, where we added our 3D Graphic Intro and Overlays, and

Matrox MC-100 Review

Heath Firestone       January 2013 Matrox makes really interesting products, but sometimes at first glance, it can be difficult to recognize what is particularly unique about their offerings. Review: Velocity Micro ProMagix HD80A

MANUFACTURER: Velocity Micro PRODUCT: ProMagix HD80A PRICE: Base: $4,079; as tested: $7,999 WEBSITE: www.velocitymicro.com  When I decided to do a review on the ProMagix HD80A computer by Velocity Micro, I realized that it is tricky to do a review on a totally-customizable, high-end desktop computer. The review machine is just one potential configuration, which can be customized to the buyer’s needs, and because a desktop computer is in large part a sum of its parts, reviews are a bit more complicated. Since most of

Wacom One Drawing Tablet Review

Review: Wacom One Display Tablet with ExpressKey Remote       When I was given the opportunity to review Wacom’s new Wacom One Creative Pen Display tablet, (not to be confused with the earlier One by Wacom, (which has no display)), I was intrigued. The Wacom One is a tablet with a 13.3” display, and has most of the pen input functions you would expect from a Wacom device, just slimmed down so as not to compete with their higher end products.

Creality Large Enclosure Review

Creality Large Fireproof Enclosure Review     I’ve seen a couple of reviews on the Creality Enclosure, but honestly I’m glad I didn’t see them before buying two.  The reviews weren’t very good, and suggested that the enclosure was a bad idea.  I have used an enclosure for my heavily modified Wanhao i3+ that I bought off of a friend, who used the Ikea Lack end table setup for building the enclosure. He printed a lot of ABS using this setup,

Insta360 Sphere

Insta360 has just announced their new Insta360 Sphere “Invisible Drone Camera”.  I have always believed that drones and 360 degree cameras are a natural fit. In fact, I have many times contemplated attaching my Fusion 360 to my drone because of the potential of the kinds of shots I could get, but it never seemed practical. In order to keep the drone from blocking too much of the view, I’d have to suspend it from
