Project: Fog for Miniatures

This was never planned as a project for CinemaTechnica Kids, it was just an impromptu play session with my son, when I was showing him an LED ultrasonic mister. My son loves Godzilla and even has some really hard to get miniatures, so naturally, on seeing how cool ultrasonic misters are, he wanted to do a photo session.

When I was off-loading media from memory cards, I came across some of the shots and thought this might make a cool, short article.

We shot with both an iPad Pro and a Sony A7S. Both produced good images, but the A7S had the advantage in low light settings.

So here’s the setup. We used an LED ultrasonic fogger/mister, a clear container with water around a half inch above the mister, some granite rocks from our backyard, and some small toys, in this case, Godzilla and Mecha Godzilla. Obviously he should have hidden the cord better. He was really going for more of a mysterious hint of Godzilla with more fog, and just a shadow of his Dorsal Plates showing through the fog.

Here’s the basic setup.

This isn’t really a tutorial, but it was a lot of fun and kept my son interested for quite a while. The things that probably would have produced more impressive pictures would be to get the camera a lot closer to the subjects. It was shooting a lot of water droplets into the air and the iPad and the A7S aren’t waterproof, so we kept a little distance and cropped the photos in post. The same thing shot with a newer waterproof iPhone, probably could have produced some even more dramatic photos. We did not use a GoPro for these shots because it a was pretty low light shoot, and the GoPros with their tiny lenses and image sensors don’t do great in low light.

I’ll plan on doing an in depth tutorial on miniature photography and filmmaking for kids in the future, since filming toys is a popular topic with kids.

Here are the images he is most proud of, and are the closest to his “vision” of what he was going for.
