Blackmagic Design at NAB 2022

Blackmagic Design had a bunch of cool stuff they were showing at NAB this year. For me, the most exciting thing was their new HyperDeck Shuttle HD, which is a really nice feeling Jog Shuttle, which also functions as an HD Hyperdeck recorder, recording from HDMI to either SD or USB-C. Additionally, it can be used as a teleprompter. But where it really comes in handy for people with an ATEM Mini Pro (like me), is that it addresses a couple of  the limitations of the ATEM Mini Pro. The first of these, is the difficulty of playing back video captured to the ATEM Mini Pro. With the HyperDeck Shuttle, you have the ability to play back the videos recorded on your attached media. So if you are using it as a master recorder, you would feed the HDMI out of your ATEM Mini into the HDMI in on your HyperDeck Shuttle, and run and HDMI out from it to a monitor. On the ATEM Mini pro, if you want to record to the ATEM, your only option is to hook up a USB hard drive or other USB-C media. The problem with this is that if you are also using your ATEM Mini Pro as a webcam device within something like Zoom, you don’t have the option of using the USB drive for recording. But in the case of the Hyperdeck Shuttle combo, you can still use the USB webcam feature, and use the HyperDeck for recording, and be able to view the files if you use the playback function of the HyperDeck Shuttle. On that note, you can instead use it as a playback device or as a teleprompter. So it’s a really versatile and interesting piece of equipment which could certainly compliment an ATEM Mini Pro setup, or even an ATEM Mini if you don’t need webcam capabilities. It comes in at $495.

The other announcements from Blackmagic Design are cool, but in particular, I liked the idea of the Cloud Pod, which allows you to use up to two USB-C drives with one 10G Ethernet port for access to fast NAS, or working with their cloud service with the same capabilities of monitoring via HDMI. And this comes in at $395.
